Nick and Frida’s first meeting was serendipitous as she was supposed to have been with Diego in San Francisco, but she had traveled to Mexico several days ahead of him. By the time Diego had come home, Nick had returned to New York with a letter from Frida telling him, “Nick, I love you like I would an angel. You are a lillie of the valley my love. I will never forget you, never,never. You are my whole life. I hope you will never forget this, Frida.” And the beginning of a ten-year affair had begun. In the summer of 1941, Nick closed a circle when he captured their last moment of closeness in a stunning self-portrait with Frida in her studio, surrounded by her universe. Uncannily, Nick exposed their affair from beginning to end as objects play off one another. Frida sits at her easel, which holds her self-portrait Me and My Parrots. Looking away from him, with a sad expression she stares at the camera; Nick standing to the other side of the easel, turns his infatuated look on her.
