Nasreddin Hoca bir gün… One day Nasreddin Hodja… By Esra Alagöz A Deep Approach to Turkish Teaching and Learning Wisconsin Center for Education Research, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Cauldron Nasreddin Hodja had borrowed a cauldron from his neighbor. When he didn't return it for a long time, the neighbor came to his door asking for it. “Hodja, could I take the cauldron back?” “Ah, sure,” Hodja said, “let me bring it.” When Hodja came back to the door with the cauldron, the neighbor noticed that there was a small pot in it. “What’s this?” “Well, congratulations! Your cauldron gave birth to a baby pot.” said the Hodja. The neighbor, incredulous, yet happy with the news, thanked Hodja and went home. A few weeks later, one day Hodja came again, asking to borrow the cauldron. The neighbor lent Hodja the cauldron without hesitation. However, Hodja did not return it back. So the neighbor asked for it again. “Hodja, are you done with the cauldron?” “Oh, neighbor” said Hodja sadly, “I am afraid your cauldron is dead.” “Hodja, that's not possible; a cauldron cannot die!” shouted the neighbor. But Nasreddin Hodja had his answer ready. “My dear fellow, you can believe that it can give birth. Why can't you believe that it can also die?”

Hoca,beş on adım ilerlemiş, bastonunu yere saplamış. “Dünyanın ortası burasıdır” demiş. Şaşkın şaşkın bakan cahiller: “Nasıl olur Hocam ?” demişler. Hoca da: “İnanmazsanız ölçün.” demiş.

Measure it! One day, the villagers were discussing the mysteries of the universe. Because they weren't getting anywhere with their reflections, they decided to consult with Nasreddin Hodja. “Hodja,” they said, “you are a knowledgeable man. Maybe you can answer our questions. Where is the center of the earth?' Nasreddin Hodja walked a few steps and said: “Right here under my feet.” he said. “Hodja,” protested the villagers, “how do you know you are right?” “If you don't believe me,” said Hodja, “measure it for yourself!”

-Beni ilgilendirmez! -Ama adam tepsiyi sizin eve götürüyordu. -O zaman seni ilgilendirmez!

Baklava One day Hodja and his friends were sitting at the coffee house. One man who loved baklava said to him: “Hodja” he said, “ I saw a guy carrying a large tray of baklava” “It's none of my business.” Hodja shrugged his shoulders. “But, Hodja, he was taking it to your house.” “In that case,” Hodja asserted, “it's none of your business.”

You are right, too! One day, when Nasreddin Hodja was the judge in the town, two men with a conflict came to him and asked him to resolve their case. The Hodja listened to the first. “You are right!” he said when the first one explained his case. Then, the Hodja listened to the defendant. “You are right!” he said to the defendant as well. Everyone in the room was surprised. One of the observers protested. “Hodja,” he said, “You agreed with both of the parties. The case can't be settled if you agree with both of them.” Nasreddin Hodja considered this for a moment, then he said: “You are right too!”
