4 AMY'S RESTAURANT Amy's Restaurant is an example of a good place to eat in Greenwich Village. It's a perfect place for students to eat lunch and dinner. It's clean, the service is fast and the prices are reasonable. Amy's has a different special every day. The special includes fish or meat, vegetables, a mixed salad, bread and butter, dessert and coffee or tea - all for $3.45. The special and the other items on Amy's menu are always excellent for the prices.

5 SMALL CARS When you go out, you can see a lot of cars, buses and trucks on the roads.The streets are always very crowded. Today, many people would rather use small cars. Small cars are cheaper and they are more economical because you can save petrol and you spend less money. These small cars are also safer because they can't go more than 100 kilometers per hour. In the future, a lot of people will probably use small cars, and probably these cars will use electricity so there will be less pollution in cities.

6 HOME SWEET HOME For many British people, a house is the most important thing in their lives. In fact, 60% of the population doesn't live in rented housing. They would rather have their own houses, but prices are going up all the time, and many young people have not got enough money to buy a house. They live in small flats or in their parents' house (even when they are married). Prices are especially high in the southeast of England. In the north, and in Scotland, prices are quite low. Young people often buy old houses, perhaps more than a hundred years old because they are not so 10 expensive. But they have to spend a lot of time and money on repairs and decoration.

Her iki kullanım da gelecek zaman ifade eder. Will-future yapısı tahmin ve varsayımların yanı sıra söz verirken ayrıca ani kararlarla yaptığımız eylemler için kullanılır. Going to-future ise planlı gelecek eylemleri söz konusu olduğunda kullanılır.

15 Use of the Future Tenses / İngilizcede Gelecek Zamanın Kullanımı
1-      Geleceğe yönelik bir tahminde bulunuyorsak “will” ya da “be going to” kullanabiliriz. (prediction) There will / is going to be a fall in prices before the elections. / Fiyatlarda seçimlerden önce bir düşüş olacak. According to the weather report, it will / is going to rain tomorrow. / Hava tahminlerine göre yarın yağmur yağacak. You will / are going to have an accident if you don’t drive more carefully. / Eğer daha dikkatli sürmezsen kaza yapacaksın. 2-      Ancak planlanmış, önceden tasarlanmış bir durum ya da eylemden söz edeceksek yalnızca “be going to” kullanmamız gerekir. Ancak bu kullanım cansız varlıklar için uygun değildir. (prior plan) > Why have you bought too many chocolate bars? / Neden bu kadar çok çikolata aldın? > I’m going to make a chocolate cake. / Çikolatalı kek yapacağım. – Why is your son saving money? / Oğlun neden para biriktiriyor? – He is going to buy that remote control boat he saw yesterday. / Dün gördüğü o uzaktan kumandalı gemiyi alacak.

16 3-      Yeni haberdar olduğumuz bir konuda yapmaya istekli olduğumuz eylem ya da durumlar için ise “will” kullanılır. (willingness) > The guests are coming in an hour and the dishes need washing but I have a lot of other things to do. / Misafirler bir saate geliyorlar, bulaşıkların yıkanması gerek ama daha benim yapacak bir sürü başka işim var. > Don’t worry. I’ll wash the dishes. / Merak etme, ben yıkarım bulaşıkları. – I don’t have enough money with me. / Yanıma fazla para almamışım. – No problem. I’ll lend you some. / Sorun değil, ben ödünç veririm. > I have a bad headache. / Başım çok ağrıyor. > Wait here. I’ll bring you an aspirin for you. / Bekle ben sana bir aspirin getireyim. Burada dikkat edilmesi gereken “will” ile kurulan bu cümlelerin Türkçe ’ye nasıl çevrildiğidir. “Yıkayacağım, ödünç vereceğim veya getireceğim” biçimde değil “yıkarım, ödünç veririm ve getireyim” olarak aktarılmıştır. 4-       Bir olay ve durumun gerçekleşeceğine dair belirtiler varsa o zaman “goingto” kullanımı daha uygun düşer. Örnek verecek olursak; It’s freezing out there. It’s going to snow. / Hava buz gibi. Kar yağacak. Wild berry shrubs have been blossoming for a few weeks now and it looks like we’re going to get a good harvest of blueberries this year. /Yaban mersini çalıları bir haftadır açıyor, bu gidişle bu sene mavi mersininden iyi ürün alacağız.

17 5-      “Tomorrow, next week, next month, next winter, in three days, in five minutes, five days from now, two years from now, soon” gibi zaman zarfları bu zamanlarla yaygın olarak kullanılan zarflardır. Tomorrow is a public holiday, so I won’t go to school. / Yarın resmi tatil olduğu için okula gitmeyeceğim. I will graduate in a year. / Bir yıl sonra mezun olacağım. I will take an exam next month. / Önümüzdeki ay bir sınavım var. Five years from now, I’ll buy a new a car./ Bundan beş sonra yeni bir araba alacağım. Bunun yanı sıra cümlenin kurulduğu yani içinde bulunulan zaman göre gelecek zaman ifade eden diğer pek çok zarf da bu zamanlarla kullanılabilir. Örneğin; (In the evening – Akşamleyin) I’m going to watch the evening news. / Akşam haberlerini dinleyeceğim. I’m not going to have dinner this evening. / Bu akşam yemek yemeyeceğim. 6-      “Was – were going to” yapısı “am – is – are going to” yapısının geçmiş halidir. Anlam olarak ise geçmişte planlanan, niyet edilen ama çeşitli nedenlerle gerçekleştirilemeyen eylemler ya da gerçekleşmeyen durumları kapsar. Peter and I were going to visit our old friends from high school, but just as we were leaving home, some guests arrived, so we couldn’t. /Peter ve ben liseden eski okul arkadaşlarımızı ziyarete gidecektik ama tam evden çıkarken misafirler geldi, gidemedik. We were going to have dinner in Red Square but it was closed due to a demonstration. / Kızıl Meydan’da akşam yemeği yiyecektik ama bir gösteri nedeniyle kapatılmıştı.
