2 GPS Nedir? Global Positioning System olarak açılımı olan uydu bazlı radyo navigasyon sistemine verilen addır. Amerikan Savunma Bakalığı'nın denetiminde ve idamesinde olan sistem 24 adet uydu takımından oluşur. Uyduların yörünge hareketi 12 saat sürer. Ufuk çizgisi üzerinde erişilebilen maksimum uydu sayısı günün saati ve konuma bağlı olarak 8-12 arasında değişir. 3 boyutlu pozisyon elde edebilmek için en az 4 adet uydudan yayınlanan sinyalin işlenmesi gerekir. Normal şartlarda yani çevrede GPS sinyallerini engelleyecek fiziksel engel yok ise en az 6-8 arası sayıda uydu ile iletişim kurulur.

9 Picture a shipboard radar display, with overlaid electronic chart data, that includes a mark for every significant ship within radio range, each as desired with a velocity vector (indicating speed and heading).  Each ship "mark" could reflect the actual size of the ship, with position to GPS or differential GPS accuracy.  By "clicking" on a ship mark, you could learn the ship name, course and speed, classification, call sign, registration number, MMSI, and other information.  Maneuvering information, closest point of approach (CPA), time to closest point of approach (TCPA) and other navigation information, more accurate and more timely than information available from an automatic radar plotting aid, could also be available.  Display information previously available only to modern Vessel Traffic Service operations centers could now be available to every AIS-equipped ship.  

10 VDR (VOYAGE DATA RECORDER)
Voyage Data Recorder, or VDR, is a data recording system designed for all vessels required to comply with the IMO's International Convention SOLAS Requirements (IMO Res.A.861(20)) in order to collect data from various sensors on board the vessel. It then digitises, compresses and stores this information in an externally mounted protective storage unit. The protective storage unit is a tamper-proof unit designed to withstand the extreme shock, impact, pressure and heat, which could be associated with a marine incident (fire, explosion, collision, sinking, etc).

11 VDR (VOYAGE DATA RECORDER)
Although the primary purpose of the VDR is for accident investigation after the fact, there can be other uses of recorded data for preventive maintenance, performance efficiency monitoring, heavy weather damage, accident avoidance and training purpose to improve safety and reduce running cost.

Passenger ships and ships other than passenger ships of 3000 gross tonnage and upwards constructed on or after 1 July 2002 must carry voyage data recorders to assist in accident investigations, under regulations adopted in 2000, which entered into force on 1 July 2002. VDR

13 Simplified Voyage Data Recorder (S-VDR)
Requirements of IMO Performance Standard MSC.163(78), is a lower cost simplified version VDR for small ships with only basic ship's data recorded. (built before 1st July 2002) The S-VDR is not required to store the same level of detailed data as a standard VDR, but nonetheless should maintain a store, in a secure and retrievable form, of information concerning the position, movement, physical status, command and control of a vessel over the period leading up to and following an incident.
