Zamanla, daha çok sayıda Arap sanatçı, ne kadar Batılı olmak için çaba gösterse de, Batılı olmadıkları gerçeğinin bilincine varıyordu. Kimlik arayışı aşamasında üç grup sanatçı vardı: İlk grup, yerel konular üzerine çalışmalarını sürdüren ve hiç duraksamadan akademik figüratif resim ve izlenimcilikten dışavurumculuğa, kübizme, gerçeküstücülüğe ve soyut resme geçenlerdi. İkinci grup, çalışmalarını, kültürel miraslarıyla örtüştürmeye çalışırken üçüncü grup, sanatın evrensel olduğuna inanarak sanatları ile kültürlerini örtüştürmek için herhangi bir neden olduğunu düşünmüyordu. After World War II, when Western colonialism in the Middle East was in retreat, people in the region began to turn towards their roots, dig into their heritage, and take a new pride in their nationalism and newly-found political independence. Gradually, a growing number of Arab artists woke up to the fact that they were not after all Westerners, no matter how hard they strove to be so. During the search for identity stage there were three groups of artists. The first continued their work with local subject matter and made the jump from academic figuration and Impressionism to Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstraction without any hesitation. The second tried to identify their work with their cultural heritage. The third group believed that art was universal and found no reason to identify with their own culture in their art.

Mısırlı sanatçılar, Eski Mısır ve Kıpti sanatını, irdelediler; Suriyeliler, Bizans geçmişlerini araştırdılar; Kuzey Afrikalı sanatçılar, Afrikalı ve Berberi köklerine döndüler; Ürdünlüler ise Nebati geçmişlerini keşfettiler. Bunun bir sonucu olarak, figüratif resimlerde doğalcı tasvirlerin yerini stilize biçimler aldı, Bir yandan da halk motifleri ve imgeleri ile yerli motifler, dışavurumcu ve soyut kompozisyonların bir parçasını oluşturmaya başladı. Çağdaş Arap sanatçılarının, sahici, çağdaş bir kimlik arayışlarında keşfedecekleri ikinci esin kaynağı, özellikle minyatürler ve tezhiplerle metal işlerdeki ve mimari süslemelerdeki girift arabesk desenlerle İslam sanatıydı. Bunları, çağdaş Arap sanatında Modern Hat Okulu çalışmaları takip etti. The search of the artists who wanted to identify their work with their cultural heritage led them to re-establish their bonds with their own cultural patrimony.They delved into their history and went beyond the Islamic period to explore the ancient civilizations that had once flourished in their countries. Egyptians probed Pharaonic and Coptic art, Syrians investigated their Byzantine background, the North Africans returned to their African and Berber roots, Jordanians explored their Nabataean past. Consequently, stylized forms replaced naturalistic renditions in figurative paintings, while folk motifs and iconography became part of expressionist and abstract compositions so did indigenous motifs. A second source of inspiration to be explored by contemporary Arab artists in their search for a genuine, contemporary identity was Islamic art, particularly miniatures and intricate arabesque designs found in illuminations, metalwork, and architectural decoration. These were followed by the inception of the Modern Calligraphic School in contemporary Arab art.
