2 Aim of the Course Studying and analysing a historical building according to its design principles, materials and building techniques, socio-economic and cultural values, traditions, as well as physical modifications and deteriorations since its initial construction Gaining knowledge on how to use these analyses on preservation actions (such as repair and adaptive re-use) and how to approach the evaluation of architectural and urban morphology, gaining a scientific perspective on urban and architectural heritage assets. Dersin Amacı Tarihi bir yapının tasarım ilkeleri, taşıyıcı sistem, malzeme ve yapım teknikleri, sosyo-ekonomik ve kültürel değerler, gelenekler, inşa edildiği zamandan günümüze değin meydana gelen fiziksel değişiklikler ve bozulmalar açısından incelenmesi, özelliklerinin belirlenmesi ve değerlendirilmesi, Onarım, yeniden işlevlendirme vb. koruma amaçlı eylemlerde bu verilerin kullanılması ve mevcut kentsel ve mimari dokunun değerlendirilmesi sırasında izlenecek tutum hakkında bilinçlendirme, korunması gerekli kentsel ve mimari değerlere karşı bilimsel bir bakış açısı kazandırması

3 STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE
Each week, a theoretical lecture (1 hour) will be delivered followed by a studio course. In the studio, the students will make teams/groups of 3 and each week they will be required to present their work (including studies, sketches, notes, photographs and technical drawings) related to the surveyed building. Each group work will be evaluated by the studio instructors. NOTE: FOR EACH STUDIO COURSE, IT IS OBLIGATORY TO BRING ALL THE SKETCHES, PHOTOGRAPHS AND RELEVANT DOCUMENTS RELATED TO THE STUDIED BUILDING. Attendance to both theoretical and studio parts is necessary.

Date Lecture Studio (Week 1) Introduction to the course and studio work Determining study groups Assignment: Sketching the house (plan), drafting of living room plan (1/20) and photographs (Week 2) Basic surveying techniques Submission: 1/20 plan of living room with sketches and photographs Assignment: Scaled drawing of living room (Week 3) Advanced surveying techniques Assignment: Survey of the adjacent room / partial survey of the house (plan) (Week 4) History of building survey Assignment: Scaled drawing of adjacent rooms and hall (1/20) (plan) (Week 5) Traditional building elements Assignment: Scaled drawing of adjacent rooms and hall (1/20) (section) (Week 6) Submission of Studio Assignment 1 (Week 7) Deterioration types for timber and masonry buildings Site visit for Assignment-2 Assignment: sketching a historic building façade, taking photographs (Week 8) Analysis of building materials and construction techniques Assignment: surveying the façade, analyzing materials and elements (Week 9) MIDTERM EXAM (Week 10) Analysis of Architecture Faculty Assignment: Façade survey, Analyses of materials and elements (Week 11) Analysis of historic sites Assignment: Façade survey Analyses of deterioration types and modifications on the façade (Week 12) Submission of Studio Assignment 2 (Week 13) Course evaluation Assignment: Historic building analysis, general evaluations and comments (Week 14) Assignment: Analysis of modifications and original parts with up-to-date photos, sketches and similar visual material (Week 15) MAKE-UP EXAM

5 EVALUATION OF THE COURSE
Midterm exam: 18 % 2 Assignments: 42 % (Assignment 1: 18%, Assignment 2: 24%) Final exam: 20 % Final (third) assignment: 20%
