Encoding: is the concepts, and organization of the verbal communication. Hearing is the physical awareness of sounds. Listening is the interpretation of these sounds as words and thoughts. Decoding is the meaning that is given to these words by the learner.

At the encoding level, the presenter’s lack of communication skills or understanding of the audience can prevent a clear message from being perceived. At the hearing level, the sound volume can be too soft or too loud and cause the hearer difficulty. In addition, a monotonous delivery can cause the students to “tune out”. Physical hearing problems can block an individual’s ability to hear. At the listening level, a receiver’s lack of listening skills can prevent full understanding of the message. Ask student for the main ideas, details and inferences.
