Following the royalty, the use of portraits also became commonplace amongst the wealthy bourgeoisie classes.Commissions became widespread among the lesser known artists along with the famous ones. These portraits, which did not have to follow the same rules that showed the subject of the portrait as a prototype rather than a real person, are far more lively, varied and interesting. In addition to the face of the subject, an important role in portraiture was the setting in which the person to be painted occupied, the richness of their attire, armour, jewels or insignia, the animals accompanying them, and the fruit, flowers and objects of all kinds that appear in the painting – the furniture, curtains, carpets, etc. – since all of these elements go beyond mere adornment and have a symbolic value helping the viewer recognise the identity, class and importance of the subject in the portrait. From the 15th century onwards, when the portraiture tradition gained importance, it was common practice, for portrait painters to move from one court to another at the request of monarchs, who wished to be painted by the finest artists. It was usual for Italian artists to be found in St. Petersburg, for Flemish and Dutch artists to be commissioned to paint the monarchs of Great Britain and Spain, for French artists to employ their brilliant skills in creating portraits of clients across the whole of Europe. Such was the case of Martin van Meytens the Younger, who visited half the courts in Europe, from Stockholm, where he was born, to The Netherlands, England, Paris, Dresden, and a number of Italian courts, ending up as the director of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and the favoured artist of Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria.
