Standardized Technique The standardized technique adopts the same working length definition for all instruments introduced into a root canal and therefore relies on the inherent shape of the instruments to impart the final shape to the canal The technique was easy to perform in straight canals of mature teeth exhibiting natural taper but posed problems in small, curved canals. Step-back The apical part of the root canal is prepared first and the canal is then flared from apex to crown. The step-back technique emphasizes keeping the apical preparation small, in its original position, and producing a gradual taper.

Subsequent larger files are introduced at 1-mm increments After each step back, the canal is irrigated and the MAF replaced to the established working length to remove any loosened debris.

BALANCED FORCE The balanced force technique involves three or four steps. It is particularly useful when preparing the apical part of severely curved canals.

BALANCED FORCE Regarding hand movements, a general agreement exists that the so-called balanced force technique creates the least canal aberrations with K-files. General agreement exists that it provides excellent canal-centering ability, superior to other techniques with hand instruments.
