17 Control and Coordinate Access
Two methods are used to control and coordinate access to the shared RF medium Distributed coordination function (DCF) For wireless using CSMA/CD (Ethernet) is difficult Fading(attenuation) in wireless Hidden-station problem between wireless stations It operates similar to CSMA/CA Point coordination function (PCF) Now let’s look at some access control methods

19 Ethernet Frame Format The term frame format refers to the way a packet is organized including details such as the size and meaning of individual fields The main reason that older versions of Ethernet have remained compatible with newer versions arises from the frame format, which has remained constant since the DIX standard was created in the 1970s © 2009 Pearson Education Inc., Upper Saddle River, NJ. 23 Mechanisms for Multi-Access
How do multiple, independent computers coordinate access to a shared medium? There are three broad approaches: they can use a modified form of a multiplexing technique they can engage in a distributed algorithm for controlled access or they can use a random access strategy

25 A Taxonomy of Mechanisms for Multi-Access

26 Static and Dynamic Channel Allocation
Channelization refers to a mapping between a given communication and a channel in the underlying system There should be a mapping between entities and a channel is referred to as 1-to-1 and static Static channel allocation works well for situations where the set of communicating entities is known in advance and does not change In many networks the set of entities using the network varies over time As an example, consider cellular telephones in a city users move, and they can turn a cell phone on and off at any time thus, the set of cell phones that are operating in the range of a given cell tower varies constantly A dynamic channel allocation scheme is needed; a mapping can be established when a new station appears, and the mapping can be removed when the station disappears

28 Channelization Protocols
Channelization protocols extend the multiplexing techniques

29 Kanal oluşturma protokolleri
Kanal oluşturma protokolleri çoklama tekniklerini genişletir.

30 Controlled Access Protocols
Controlled access protocols provide a distributed version of statistical multiplexing

31 Denetimli erişim protokolleri
Denetimli erişim protokolleri, istatistiksel çoklamanın bir dağıtık versiyonunu sağlar.

32 Random Access Protocols
Some LANs do not employ a controlled access mechanism Instead, a set of computers attached to a shared medium attempt to access the medium without coordination The term random is used because access only occurs when a given station has a packet to send and randomization is employed to prevent all computers on a LAN from attempting to use the medium at the same time the descriptions of specific methods below will clarify the use of randomization

34 Random Access Protocols

35 CSMA/CD It is widely known as Ethernet
It uses cable as a shared medium instead of broadcasting radio frequency transmissions through the atmosphere Ethernet uses three (3) mechanisms to handle collisions: Carrier sense Collision detection Binary exponential backoff

36 CSMA/CD Genel olarak bilinen ismi Ethernet
Paylaşıla ortam olarak kablolar kullanılır Radyo frekanslarının atmosfer boyunca yayınlanmasının yerine Ethernet çarpışmalar ile başa çıkmak için 3 mekanizma kullanır: Carrier sense (taşıyıcıyı dinleyen) Collision detection (çarpışma tespiti) Binary exponential backoff (ikili kodlu üstel geri çekilme)

37 CSMA/CD Ethernet requires each station to monitor the cable to detect whether another transmission is already in progress this process is known as carrier sense it prevents the most obvious collision problems and substantially improves network utilization A collision can occur if two stations wait for a transmission to stop, find the cable idle, and both start transmitting A small part of the problem is that even at the speed of light, some time is required for a signal to travel down the cable Thus, a station at one end of the cable cannot know instantly when a station at the other end begins to transmit

38 CSMA/CD Ethernet, aynı anda başka bir iletimin gerçekleştiğini anlamak için, her istasyonun kabloyu izlemesini gerektirir bu işleme carrier sense denir çok belirgin çarpışma problemlerini engeller ve ağ verimliliğini oldukça artırır Çarpışma, iki istasyonun, iletimin tamamlanmasını bekleyip, kabloyu boş bulup, her ikisinin iletime başlamasıyla meydana gelebilir Küçük bir problem de şudur: Işık hızında bile, sinyalin kabloda ilerlemesi için bir miktar zamana ihtiyaç vardır Yani, kablonun bir ucundaki istasyon, diğer uçtaki istasyonun iletime başladığını ilk anda farkedemez.

39 CSMA/CD To handle collisions
each station monitors the cable during transmission If the signal on the cable differs from the signal that the station is sending it means that a collision has occurred the technique is known as collision detection when a collision is detected, the sending station aborts transmission By using exponential backoff an Ethernet can recover quickly after a collision

40 CSMA/CD Çarpışma kontrolü için
iletim esnasında, kabloyu tüm istasyonlar izler Kablodaki sinyal gönderilen sinyalden farklı ise çarpışma oldu demektir bu teknik çarpışma tespiti (collision detection) olarak adlandırılır çarpışma tespit edildiğinde, gönderici istasyon iletimi durdurur Exponential backoff kullanılarak çarpışmadan sonra Ethernet çabucak iyileşebilir

41 CSMA/CD Binary Exponential Backoff
After a collision occurs a computer must wait for the cable to become idle again before transmitting a frame Randomization is used to avoid having multiple stations transmit simultaneously as soon as the cable is idle The standard specifies a maximum delay, d, and requires each station to choose a random delay less than d after a collision occurs When two stations each choose a random value the station that chooses the smallest delay will proceed to send a packet and the network will return to normal operation In the case, where two or more computers happen to choose nearly the same amount of delay they will both begin to transmit at nearly the same time producing a second collision

42 CSMA/CD Binary Exponential Backoff

43 CSMA/CD Binary Exponential Backoff
To avoid a sequence of collisions Ethernet requires each computer to double the range from which a delay is chosen after each collision a computer chooses a random delay between 0 - d after one collision a random delay between 0 - 2d after a second collision a random delay between 0 - 4d after a third, and so on After a few collisions, the range from which a random value is chosen becomes large Thus, some computer will choose a random delay shorter than the others, and will transmit without a collision Doubling the range of the random delay after each collision is known as binary exponential backoff

44 CSMA/CD Binary Exponential Backoff

47 CSMA/CA CSMA/CD does not work as well in wireless LANs
A transmitter used in a wireless LAN has a limited range Wireless LANs use a modified access protocol known as CSMA with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) The CSMA/CA triggers a brief transmission from the intended receiver before transmitting a packet

48 CSMA/CA CSMA/CD kablosuz LAN’larda o kadar iyi çalışmaz
Kablosuz LAN’da kullanılan vericinin menzili kısıtlıdır Kablosuz LAN’lar değiştirilmiş erişim protokolü kullanır CSMA + Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) CSMA/CA bir paketi iletmeden önce hedef alıcıdan kısa bir iletim başlatır

49 CSMA/CA Collisions of control messages can occur when using CSMA/CA, but they can be handled easily For example, if computer1 and computer3 each attempt to transmit a packet to computer2 at exactly the same time, their control messages will collide When a collision occurs, the sending stations apply random backoff before resending the control messages. Because control messages are much shorter than a packet, the probability of a second collision is low 49 49

51 CSMA/CA Contention and Contention-Free Access
The standard defines three timing parameters as follows: Short Inter-Frame Space (SIFC) of 10 sec defines how long a receiving station waits before sending an ACK or other response Distributed Inter-Frame Space (DIFC) of 50 sec defines how long a channel must be idle before a station can attempt transmission, which is equal to SIFS + two Slot Times Slot Time of 20 sec

53 CSMA/CA (Contention and Contention-Free Access) Rekabet ve Rekabetsiz Erişim

54 CSMA/CA 802.11 sender 1 if sense channel idle for DIFS then
transmit entire frame (no CD) 2 if sense channel busy then start random backoff time timer counts down while channel idle transmit when timer expires if no ACK, increase random backoff interval, repeat 2 receiver - if frame received OK return ACK after SIFS (ACK needed due to hidden terminal problem) sender receiver DIFS data SIFS ACK

55 CSMA/CA 802.11 verici 1 algılama kanalı DIFS kadar boş kaldıysa
tüm frame’i ilet (CD yok) 2 algılama kanalı meşgul ise random backoff zamanını başlat kanal boştayken sayaç geri sayar geri sayım bittiğinde iletimi başlat ACK yoksa, random backoff aralığını artır, 2. adımı tekrarla alıcı - frame düzgün alındıysa SIFS’ten sonra ACK dön (ACK gizli terminal probleminden dolayı gereklidir) verici alıcı DIFS data SIFS ACK

56 CSMA: Avoiding collisions
idea: allow sender to “reserve” channel rather than random access of data frames: avoid collisions of long data frames sender first transmits small request-to-send (RTS) packets to BS using CSMA RTSs may still collide with each other (but they’re short) BS broadcasts clear-to-send CTS in response to RTS CTS heard by all nodes sender transmits data frame other stations defer transmissions avoid data frame collisions completely using small reservation packets!

57 CSMA: Çarpışma önleme plan: veri frame’lerinin rasgele erişiminden ziyade , göndericinin kanal ayırmasına izin ver: uzun veri frame’lerinin çarpışmasını önle gönderici önce küçük request-to-send (RTS) paketlerini CSMA kullanarak BS’e iletir RTS’ler hala çarpışabilir (ancak kısadırlar) BS RTS’ye yanıt olarak clear-to-send CTS yayınlar CTS bütün düğümler tarafından işitilir gönderici, veri frame’ini iletir diğer istasyonlar iletimi erteler Küçük ayırma paketleri kullanarak, Veri frame’i çarpışmalarını tamamen önle!

58 CSMA: Collision Avoidance: RTS-CTS exchange
B AP RTS(A) RTS(B) reservation collision RTS(A) CTS(A) DATA (A) ACK(A) defer time

59 (Interframe Spaces) Frame’lerarası Boşluklar

60 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF)
It is similar to CSMA/CA DCF uses a navigation allocation vector (NAV) to inform a station how long it must wait to access the medium Before a station transmitting a frame, It calculates the amount of time it needs to completely transmit the frame, which is NAV Based on frame’s length and the data transfer speed Each station uses the NAV as a countdown timer If a station attempts to transmit on the medium and the channel is in use, DCF, generates a random back-off timer Timer is the amount of time the conflicting stations must wait before attempting to retransmit Each station receives a different random period and this helps to ensure the stations don’t attempt to retransmit again at the same time Receiving station transmits an ACK frame to the network Indicating no errors were detected If the sending station doesn’t receive an ACK in a certain period Assumption is that either collision occurred or there is RF interference

61 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF)
CSMA/CA’e benzer DCF, navigation allocation vector (NAV) kullanır Ortama erişmek için istasyona ne kadar beklemesi gerektiğini bildirir İstasyonun bir frame’i iletmesinden önce, Frame’i tamamen iletmek için gereken zaman miktarını hesaplar, NAV Frame uzunluğuna ve veri taşıma hızına bağlıdır Her istasyon NAV’ı geri sayım sayacı olarak kullanır Eğer bir istasyon kanal kullanımdayken ortam üzerinde iletim yapmaya kalkarsa, DCF, random back-off timer oluşturur Sayaç, tekrar iletime başlamadan önce çakışan istasyonların beklemesi gereken zamandır Her istasyon farklı rasgele bir aralık alır ve bununla istasyonların aynı anda tekrar iletim yapmalarının engellenmesini sağlar Alıcı istasyon ağa ACK frame’i iletir Hata meydana gelmediğine işaret eder Gönderici, belirli bir süre içerisinde ACK almazsa Çarpışma veya RF karışması olduğu kabul edilir

62 Point Coordination Function (PCF)
PCF is an optional media access control method for x PCF works like the following expression “Speak only when spoken to” An AP with PCF enabled ‘polls’ the wireless stations using the sequence configured in a PCF polling list whenever the medium is idle and no DCF-based traffic is active to see if any of the stations are ready to transmit When DCF traffic requires the medium PCF polling is disabled until the medium is once again idle PCF, if implemented/enabled Allows the WLAN to transmit both synchronous data (such as streaming media) using DCF and Asynchronous (like or web-pages) using PCF

63 Point Coordination Function (PCF)
PCF, x için opsiyonel ortam erişim kontrol metodudur PCF aşağıdaki ifade gibi çalışır “Yanlızca seninle konuşulduğunda konuş” Aktif PCF’li bir AP, kablosuz istasyonları ‘yoklar’ PCF yoklama listesinde ayarlanmış sıralamayı kullanır iletime hazır istasyonların varlığını görmek için, ortam boş olduğunda ve DCF-tabanlı aktif trafik yokken yapar DCF trafiği ortama gereksinim duyduğunda Ortam tekrar boşta kalana kadar PCF yoklama durdurulur PCF, tanımlanmış/aktif ise WLAN’ın şunları iletmesine olanak sağlar DCF kullanan senkron veri (akıcı ortamlar gibi), ve PCF kullanan asenkron veri ( ve web-sayfaları gibi)

71 AP-Client Interaction Process

72 Scanning for Signals Passive scanning Active scanning
An AP periodically broadcast a signal (beacon) Beacon is used by any wireless NIC within range to identify an AP and determine the strength of its RF signal A NIC may receive signals from number of APs Beacon contains information about the AP Service set identifier (SSID) Data rates and more Passive scanning is the default and mandatory standard for x networks Active scanning

73 Sinyal Arama Pasif arama Aktif arama
Erişim noktası periyodik olarak sinyal yayar (beacon) Beacon menzil içindeki herhangi bir NIC tarafından bir AP’yi tanımlamak ve RF sinyalinin şiddetini belirlemek için kullanılabilir Bir NIC birkaç AP’den sinyal alabilir Beacon, AP hakkında şu bilgileri içerir Service set identifier (SSID) Data rates, vs Pasif arama x ağları için varsayılan ve zorunlu standarttır Aktif arama

74 Scanning for Signals Passive scanning Active scanning
Optional scanning method Essentially the reverse of passive scanning When active scanning is in use Wireless NICs broadcast a probe frame Any AP within range reply with a probe response frame Allows a NIC to connect to an AP (of its choice) Without waiting for a beacon from AP (which may be in ‘stealth mode’) Additional frames (probe/response)

75 Sinyal Arama Pasif arama Aktif arama Opsiyonel arama metodu
Pasif aramanın tersidir Aktif arama kullanımdayken Kablosuz NIC’ler bir sorgu yayını yapar Menzil içindeki herhangi bir AP yanıt verir NIC’in (seçtiği) AP’ye bağlanmasına olanak sağlar AP’den beacon beklemeden (çünkü AP ‘gizli modda’ olabilir) Ek frame’ler (sorgu/yanıt)

76 Scanning for Signals (Active) Sinyal Arama (Aktif)

77 Device Authentication
A critical process on an network, especially in a WLAN is ‘authentication’ A network’s nodes are identified to the network and the network edge devices (AP, routers, bridges, etc) and vice versa On a wired network, client devices are connected to the same medium as network edge devices In a wireless environment, a client device network (two-way, mutual) authentication must be done, in order to Establish access between WLAN stations Avoid man-in-the-middle attacks

79 Device Authentication
WLANs implement two-level authentication Open-systems authentication Requires a wireless device to request authentication by sending an authentication request to an AP AP responds with an authentication approval AP authenticates any device with the correct SSID Shared-key authentication Optional process Public encryption keys are exchanged between stations over a secure RF channel outside x channel Because of lack of robust authentication process in standards, proprietary methods have emerged: Cisco Systems’ Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol (LEAP) Wi-Fi Alliances’ Protected Access (WPA) Protocol

80 Aygıt Doğrulama WLAN’lar iki seviyeli doğrulama tanımlar
Açık sistem doğrulaması Bir kablosuz aygıtın bir AP’ye doğrulama isteği göndermesini gerektirir AP, doğrulama onayı ile yanıt verir AP, doğru SSID’li her aygıtı doğrular Anahtar paylaşma doğrulaması İsteğe bağlı Açık şifreleme anahtarları istasyonlar arasında, x kanalı dışında bulunan güvenli bir RF kanalı üzerinden takas edilir standartlarında yeterince güçlü doğrulama yapılamadığı için, özel metotlar ortaya çıkmıştır: Cisco Systems’ Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol (LEAP) Wi-Fi Alliances’ Protected Access (WPA) Protocol

81 Network Association After authentication by an AP, a NIC must be associated with an AP It allows the NIC to synchronize with the AP and the BW of the medium Association process A wireless NIC transmits an association request frame to the AP that contains the network SSID AP replies with an association response frame includes Identity code SSID and Data rate (on which association is granted)
